Monday Morning Market Musings

This morning I got up early from my very warm bed and headed to the market. From 6 a.m.-8 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday we can indulge in a variety of garden produce grown and sold by those who live nearby.

Did I mention I had to get up from my very warm bed that now consists of not one, but four blankets on it? This morning, the low was around 53 which means it was probably that or colder inside. With no heater and little insulation, it’s a little chilly for this southern family.

Welcome to winter on the other side of the world.

I didn’t fix my hair, or my face, gathered up my sweater and bilum, tried to find a smile and headed out the door. My husband, who loves mornings, was smiling at me as I left the house, I’m sure amused by my lack of enthusiasm for mornings such as this.

The maybe ten minute walk somewhat wakes me up and I'm almost ready to smile.Inside my still half asleep brain, I’m trying to figure out what to plan for meals this week. I know I have a luncheon today that I’m bringing salad for and a dinner with friends on Wednesday...but what to make?

On the tables there are carrots, tomatoes, onion, even broccoli, and then I run across this gem...

A pumpkin!

No, it’s not a “normal” round, orange pumpkin, but it’s got  great flavor. A friend of mine gave me one last week as she was leaving town with which I graciously turned into pumpkin bread. With this one, I’ll try my hand at pumpkin soup for dinner Wednesday night.

Got a favorite pumpkin recipe or an easy idea of what to do with a variety of fresh produce? Leave a comment and share it! I would love to have more ideas to make my market mornings something to smile about :)
