Give It Up for the Hot Ham & Cheese

This post is dedicated to my GNO girls who never ever pass up
a good hot ham and cheese sandwich.

Last week we had a day off for a national holiday. In my Western culture this is the equation:

National holidays + Day off = social gathering...of which we were invited to one.

As I was trying to figure out what to bring for my “main dish” and “side dish”, I was reminded of my dear friend hot ham and cheese. My go to item...quick, easy and relatively painless.

Sigh...but there are no pre-packaged sweet rolls packed lovingly in an orange package or slices of pepper jack cheese...and I shed a little tear at the thought.

But then my mind “went there” with the crazy idea that I could make my own version of the sandwich. I then went down the path of no return and no one could stop me.

Within minutes, dough was started in the bread machine (a.k.a my life saver) and I waited for exactly one hour 29 minutes for the cycle to finish.

In the meantime I prepped my “ham”. I’m not sure if it’s really “ham” or some other processed meat product, but for my purposes it shall be called “ham”. I grated some “Save The Yellow Eyed Penguin” cheese and starting feeling like this sandwich could really happen right here in PNG.

Once the dough was done, the rolling, cutting, pressing, more rolling and stuffing began. I sadly don’t have documentation of this because my hands were covered in flour and I don’t trust anyone under the age of 12 to touch my “good” camera. (Why couldn’t hubs take the picture you ask? He was out riding his motorcycle on a hill somewhere...and brought back  this picture of his whereabouts. I don’t ask very many questions if he comes back in one piece.)

Some time later, rolls were stuffed and then the goodness happened when butter, garlic and Worcestershire gather and get happy. Yes, I have Worcestershire imported straight from the US of A, but sorry girls...no poppy seeds. As you know there was no love (or taste) lost in their absence.

Thirty minutes later and a hubby home, the result was golden brown, ooey gooey wonderfulness....

Leftovers? What are those?!

The only complaint was from my biker babe who declared he’d like more “ham” and cheese inside next time. As if there’s going to be a next time? But I guess that answer is yes...
