Duct Tape & Dr. Pepper

Two weeks ago the annual Book Parade was held at the primary campus. There are a myriad of activities the week of book parade and, of course, there’s LOTS of reading taking place. Each class sets a goal for how many combined hours they will read and then it's good luck tearing your kids out of their books to actually do homework assignments.

There’s also an art contest where the kids can draw a poster illustrating their favorite book. Teachers then judge and determine winners for each class. This year, Mo won third for her illustration of an “Ivy  & Bean” book she got over Christmas. Her win was a huge confidence booster for her artistic side.

The culmination of events is the Friday Book Parade. Each student picks their favorite character and dresses like them.

Here’s the problem: We don’t live near a Hobby Lobby, Target or a Wal-Mart, so the creative genes have to kick  in to high gear. And if you’re recovering from the plague of the month, sometimes those genes are a little slower to kick in than normal.

D handled his own outfit this year. A rendition of a Tom Swift character. Something with a sweatshirt, jeans and an old motorcycle helmet. Being mother of the year, I have zero pictures of him as he did a great job avoiding the camera.

Mo wanted to look like her prize winning cover. The character just happened to have red curly hair. Score! But she also wore a blue jumper with red polka dots. I didn’t have any plain red material, but then remembered about the red Valentine duct tape we received in a package! After many sticky, tedious circles were cut out, Mo looked almost identical to the book cover. Thanks duct tape for saving the day...again!

And in other non-related school news...Dr. Pepper is in my house!! Several weeks ago an American shipment arrived at the store bringing in cases of different sodas, candy (note the Butterfinger Mo is holding) Fritos, Cheetos and cocoa powder! We were able to purchase a case of DP a few weeks after the shipment arrived.

Let the happy dance commence!
